Darrell Kwong, one of our Front Desk team members at the Cranberry Golf Resort has shared with us his passion, goals, and achievements.
On October 19 2017, Darrell was 1 of 10,000 participants in the 21km Scotiabank Marathon Race held in Toronto, Ontario. His goal was to complete the race in less than 90 minutes, which he successfully accomplished. Darrell completed the 21km race in 1 hour 29 minutes and 52 seconds, placing 216 out of 10,000. That is an incredible achievement and we are so proud of Darrell.
Darrell has expressed how running has become a significant part of his life.
WHEN DID YOU START RUNNING AND WHAT INSPIRES YOU TO RUN?
“In 2012 I joined Across U-Hub, a charitable community youth organization. The main goal behind this group is to help youth find confidence, self-esteem, and empowerment through health and well-being. Across U-Hub has truly helped me by feeling empowered and motivated to train with others. My outcome from Across U-Hub was finding motivation to be able to train by myself.”
WHEN YOU RUN DO YOU SET GOALS?
“Yes, I always set goals. My main goal is always time, I am always trying to run faster in shorter distances. Specifically in 5k and 10k I am always trying to challenge myself and accomplish my goals.”
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT RUNNING?
“I find that running is relaxing, it is like meditation. When I run I am able to clear out my thoughts especially when I feel stressed.”
Darrell shares with us his experience at the Scotiabank Marathon Race.
TELL US ABOUT THE SCOTIABANK MARATHON RACE?
“The Scotiabank Marathon Race has about 30,000 participants join every year for the entire program, both short and long distance. The course is very scenic as it takes you through the downtown areas of Toronto seeing many iconic buildings. There are a lot of fans, bands, costumes, and fun signs – all of this motivates me. I am greatly motivated by the race community.”
HOW DID YOU MENTALLY PREPARE FOR THE SCOTIABANK MARATHON RACE?
“Practice, practice and more practice! Often people are bored when they run, however I have found a passion in running. This is a sport that I excel in, am driven on, and find not only challenge but healthy competition.”

“Yes, this is my 6th time participating in the Scotiabank Marathon Race. I am motivated to return each year because of the fun environment, scenic course, and supportive fans.”
WHY IS THE SCOTIABANK MARATHON RACE IMPORTANT TO YOU?

HOW MUCH TRAINING DO YOU DO TO PREPARE FOR THE SCOTIABANK MARATHON RACE?
“The Scotiabank Marathon Race takes a lot of training prior to the race. I train 5-6 times a week, 5-10k per day, and 8-9 months prior.”
WHAT IS YOUR NEXT RACE OR GOAL THAT YOU ARE WORKING TO ACHIEVE?
“The next race I am participating in is the HoHo Holiday 5k Race in Collingwood. I am excited to participate in this race and to wear my Santa suit!”
